Flying Dog Ranch History Banner

The property was homesteaded by the Collins family in the late 1800’s;   – hence the name Collins Creek. Many of the original agricultural properties still exist on the property, and their uses have evoled over time. Most notable is the original log homesteader’s cabin, which may be the oldest structure in Woody Creek.  During the ensuing years, the property has remained a working ranch, owned and managed by some of the Roaring Fork Valley’s oldest families, such as the Vagneurs and the Cerises.

Long-time local Trudi Peet ran the ranch as an equestrian facility until its current owner, George Stranahan, purchased the property from her 40 years ago. The ranch has evolved over the years, and virtually every building on it has served multiple purposes; several have housed visiting artists, teachers at the Aspen Community School (of which George Stranahan is a founder), and other individuals who went on to found community organizations of their own, such as Sustainable Settings.
